"The Gateway of the Monster" was the earliest-published Carnacki story, the first of five in early 1910 monthly issues of The Idler. That serial shared a top banner by {{a|Florence Briscoe}}, who also provided three interior illustrations for each story. The uniform headers presented them as Carnacki the Ghost Finder, "No. 1 to No. 5". This story therefore introduced Carnacki to the original readers.

On the other hand, both the 6-story 1913 collection and 9-story 1947 collection, begin with "The Thing Invisible" (1912), followed by "The Gateway of the Monster".
