Excerpt from the first draft of 'Thendara House'.
This piece was originally published as "Amazon Excerpt" in the Darkover Newsletter #9-10 in January, 1978. Marion Zimmer Bradley writes in the preface: "The following excerpt is from an unfinished novelette on the subject of the Free Amazons, which has the tentative title of FREEMATES."
The same issue of the DNL contained also another, much shorter piece with totally different contents, titled as "Amazon Fragment".
This was later published, again as "Amazon Excerpt", in the Darkover fanzine Moon Phases, issue #9, in 1980. There, the editor notes ""Amazon Exerpt" (c) 1980 by Marion Zimmer Bradley, printed with permission. All other works (c) 1987..."
The text in both earlier appearances is the same as in the one published in the DAW anthology 'Renunciates of Darkover' in March, 1991.
Finally, the same piece was published in the DAW anthology "Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover" in 1993, now titled as "Amazon Fragment".
The "Amazon Fragment" in the 1993 DAW anthology is *NOT* the same as the "Amazon Fragment" published in the Darkover Newsletter #9-10 in January, 1978, and the two Amazon Fragments should *NOT* be merged!
