First published in the New York Picayune Newspaper, serialized from March 27 to May 15, 1858. Jessica Amanda Salmonson says that Fitz "refused to complete his meandering fantasy" and that the final chapter "is generally credited to his editor Frank H. Bellew", although it may have been written by his sub-editor William Pool.
