Notes
{{Tr|Wayland Young}}. From the comments of the editor, Judith Merril, in Best SF 12, it seems Young's translation first appeared in the 1963 collection Gogol's Wife and Other Stories published by New Directions, but its first English language appearance was in Encounter in 1960. It is unclear whether the Encounter version was also translated by Young and that the stated © 1963 is US copyright. Ms Merril did not know when the original story was first published in Italy.
