A nearly identical draft appeared in a letter to Tevis Clyde Smith, ca. April 1930 ("Salaam: / Well, Fear Finn, I believe in days gone yore...") as an untitled poem.
Another draft contains significant differences in stanzas 2 and 3; the variant stanzas are given in The Collected Poetry of Robert E. Howard, Robert E. Howard Foundation Press, p. 690.
