Synopsis

In a postapocalyptic wasteland America, a young barbarian and his genetically enhanced telepathic dog are distracted from the struggle for survival when he becomes emotionally attached to a young woman he was planning to rape.

Per story credit in The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World, "This story has been expanded for this, its first American publication."
The original publication only had novelette length. The expanded version appears in Beyond Armageddon and no doubt in at least some subsequent publications.
