Synopsis
Lists 14 essential items of various classic works (and discusses 11 of them) with major influence on science fiction, among them the <i>Gilgamesh</i> epic, Homer's <i>Odyssey</i>, Dante's <i>Divine Comedy</i>, Shakespeare's <i>The Tempest</i> and Melville's <i>Moby Dick</i>. The 15th example is not a single piece of work but the whole body of novels by Charles Dickens. (Listed, but not discussed are Swift's <i>Gulliver's Travels</i>, Coleridge's <i>The Rime of the Ancient Mariner</i> and Shelley's <i>Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus</i>, due to reasons of space)
