The Inquestor / Chronicles of the High Inquest

The first two volumes of this trilogy were published by Timescape Books in 1982 and 1983. They were subtitled with the name and numbering of this series. The third book in the series (not part of the trilogy) was Utopia Hunters, a collection of related stories published by Bantam in 1984 and given the subtitle "Chronicles of the High Inquest". The following year Bantam Spectra published The Darkling Wind, the fourth book in the series and the third novel of the trilogy. For marketing reasons Bantam chose to give it the same subtitle as the collection, without indication that it was the third book in a trilogy of which the first two books had been published by another (now defunct) publisher. The next year (1986), Bantam published the slightly revised versions of the first two books in the series as two parts of a novel titled ''The Dawning Shadow''.
