As of 2014 the general consensus is that Rymer is the author although it is possible that Prest or possibly another writer is the author. None of the 19th century editions credit an author. Rymer and Prest are not the same person. The original penny dreadful serial version was published over a three year period with the parts generally being published on a weekly basis.
