Notes
Book written by Sibley and illustrated by Howe, with portfolio containing 4 large folded maps by Howe, in slipcase.
A two volume slipcased edition, with an 80-page book by Sibley (illustrated by Howe) detailing the history of Tolkien's maps and the genesis of his vision of Middle Earth; and a hardcover portfolio volume of 4 maps. The portfolio contains loosely inserted full-colour reproduction maps of Wilderland, Middle Earth, Beleriand, and Numenor, based on Tolkien's own originals.
The contents are an amalgamation and expansion of previously published material from 1994, 1995, and 1999, including Howe's previously published map of The Hobbit (Wilderland). (The revisions are undated.) Each essay also includes a gazetteer of placenames from each map.
