43 tales "collected and edited" by Jacobs, "illustrated" by Batten
Original preface by Jacobs gives 1889 date for the first volume:
"It might naturally have been thought that my former volume (English Fairy Tales, Nutt, 1889) had almost exhausted the scanty remains of the traditional folk-tales of England."
Not "juvenile" in the 1st ed., and others that contain the "Preface, Notes, References, and Parallels"--quoting announcement of the 1895 cheap ed. that omits those sections, retains the illustrations.
