Notes

London weekly newspaper The Observer, Sunday 1909-07-11, both covers the Friday afternoon performance at the Court Theatre (page 6) and lists the publication in the complex column "Books of the Day", section First Glance, subsection Poetry and Drama (page 5, quote):   [... title ...] By Bernard Shaw.   (Constable.) 1s.   See notice of the performance on page 6. Production of the play at the Royal Court Theatre had been billed for Friday (1909-07-09), and forbidden by the censor, yet undertaken privately that afternoon.

  • Paper wrapper July publication, format, and price from listing in "Messrs. Contable's List", The Spectator #4229 (1909-07-17) p111, as "Now Ready." The book is listed also in the complex column (perhaps weekly) "Books of the Day", The Observer 1909-07-11 p5. (The play was "billed for production at the court theater" on the 9th, forbidden by the censor, and produced privately that afternoon.)
  • HathiTrust Digital Library provides full view of one copy without original cover: Title page displays the full title above in a larger size typeface and continues, without line break, in a smaller size typeface: by Bernard Shaw, as performed by the Civic and Dramatic Guild at the Royal Court Theatre, London, on the 9th July 1909.
  • British Library (BL, below) and others report "London: A. Constable & Co[.], 1909" but the title page displays "Constable and Company Ltd. London: 1909."
