Three revisions of this story have been released. 1) The first was on the author's web site from 2009 to 2012. 2) Prior to posting to Amazon as a Kindle edition in late September 2012 the author hired Bryan Thomas Schmidt to copyedit the story. 3) Prior to print publication in February 2014 a Random House editor and the author did creative editing passes.^{(source: March 2016 e-mail from the author and this interview with Bryan Thomas Schmidt)} While the creative editing passes resulted in changes to the story, such as the very ending, they seem minor enough that we are retaining it under a single title record on ISFDB.

• First released serially as a self-published story on the author's web site from 2009 to 2012. In September 2012 the author posted it on Amazon.com (ASIN B009IEXKXI) as a Kindle eBook for $0.99 (the lowest price Amazon allows). The publication date is derived from the earliest verified purchaser review on Amazon "By Brian P. on September 28, 2012". This date is consistent with the Goodreads record for ASIN B009IEXKXI which states "September 27th 2012" and this July 2015 author interview where he says that posted the story to Amazon in late September 2012. Note however this September 23 2012 edition too.
• When queried in March 2016 the author could not recall what he used in the "Publisher" field on Amazon but believes it was his name. The eBook only has ""The Martian" is copyright © Andy Weir, 2011." Goodreads for ASIN B009IEXKXI has a blank for the publisher name. That record was created 2012-12-15 and so it seems likely the publisher name was left blank on Amazon.
• The cover art is credited on the copyright page as "The cover art is an image from NASA and is public domain."
