• "Parts of this book have been previously published in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine" stated on the copyright page. Parts I and II were previously published. Part III was published simultaneously in Asimov's. Part IV ("The Kingdom Underground") is original to this collection

• The book is published as a novel, without a table of contents page. Each of the previously published novellas have a title page and are labeled as Parts.
