Notes
Published as a serial in Young Folks' Paper with illustrations by W. Boucher, year unknown.
(Wikipedia lists five successive titles of the UK "weekly children's literary magazine" Young Folks (1871 to 1897), including Young Folks' Paper through June 1891.)
The 1892 Chambers edition text "is somewhat rearranged and is condensed by about 2000 words" according to L. W. Currey. It is published with a subtitle under the author's fullname, with some or all of the original illustrations. The publisher acknowledges, "The illustrations are reproduced with kind permission of the Proprietor of Old and Young (formerly Young Folks' Paper), in which the story appeared in serial form."

The 1893 US ed. is identical to the 1892 Chambers, apparently from WorldCat records and newspapers.
