• "Book Club Edition" printed at the bottom of the front flap of the dust jacket indicates a printing by Doubleday for its various book clubs.
• Spine of the dust jacket gives Doubleday as the publisher, but the spine and title page of the book gives the publisher as "Nelson Doubleday". This imprint indicates that this is the first edition. There was no trade hardcover edition.
• Selection of the Science Fiction Book Club for June 1971.
• No printed price or stated date of publication. Date is taken from SFBC editor Andrew Wheeler's listing posted on the rec.arts.sf.written newsgroup. Price is from an unknown source, but was the standard price in 1971.
• "3346" printed at the bottom of the back flap of the dust jacket.
• There were two simultaneous first printings, with gutter codes "B22" [verified] and "22M" [verified], both on page 179, both indicate a printing in May 1971. [Doubleday had two presses in operation 1970 to 1987]
• Known reprint codes: "27N" in July 1972 [verified], "D37" in September 1973, and "E40" in October 1974.
• "Cover illustration by Brad Holland" on rear flap, no visible signature
• "22M" printing has grey boards with black lettering
