Dates of birth and death given by the Wikipedia and St. James Guide to Fantasy Writers differ. Birth is 1883 in Wiki, and 1884-09-08 in St. James. A 1900 census record gives her a September 1884 birth date. Death is given as 1948 in the Wiki and supported by a reference, 1939 in St. James. Some sources list her year of birth as 1894. Hoppenstand, the editor of ''The Nightmare and Other Tales of Dark Fantasy'' cites the work of R. Alain Everts in determining her actual birth date. Hoppenstand also cites an autobiographical sketch, reprinted in the 1984 edition of ''Citadel of Fear'', which indicates that she also sold a much earlier story to Argosy, presumably "The Curious Experience of Thomas Dunbar".
