A noted chemical researcher (he was a Fellow of the Chemical Society), Campbell began writing with technical papers and technical articles, and then began writing fiction. Served as Technical Editor to <cite>Authentic Science Fiction</cite> until he took over as editor in 1952. He resigned in 1956 to devote full time to his research.
